Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this retirement calculator?

It gives a straightforward projection based on the contribution and return rate you enter. Actual results depend on market performance, fees, and any changes to your contributions along the way, so treat it as a planning estimate rather than a guarantee.

What return rate should I use?

There is no single appropriate return assumption. Try a range of hypothetical rates rather than treating one figure as expected. Actual returns depend on what you hold, market performance, fees and other factors, and can be negative.

Does this account for inflation?

Not directly. If you enter a real (inflation-adjusted) return rate, the result is roughly in today's spending power; if you use a nominal rate, the balance shown is in future, uninflated dollars.

Should I include employer matching in my monthly contribution?

If you want the illustration to include employer contributions, include them in the contribution figure. Check your scheme terms for the actual amount and conditions.
