How this calculator works & sources ↓

See a sensible maximum monthly rent based on your income — using the standard 30% guideline, fully adjustable.

Switching region updates the currency and swaps in typical starting figures for that country — every number stays fully editable.

This is a guideline, not a hard limit — landlords and letting agents often use their own affordability checks (commonly requiring annual income of around 30x the monthly rent), which may differ from this figure.

Frequently asked questions

Why 30% of income?

It's a long-standing budgeting guideline — rent at or below 30% of gross income generally leaves enough for other essentials and saving. It's a starting point, not a hard rule, especially in higher cost-of-living areas.

Should I use gross or net income here?

This calculator uses gross (pre-tax) income, in line with how most landlords and letting agents assess affordability. If you'd rather budget from take-home pay, use a lower percentage to compensate.

What if a landlord asks for a higher income multiple than this shows?

Many landlords and letting agents require proof of income around 30 times the monthly rent — a stricter bar than the 30% guideline. If you're close to that line, a guarantor can sometimes bridge the gap.
